Each February for the past 23 years, Chesterfield County, with the help of many corporate and individual sponsors, has conducted numerous events that have made Chesterfield County the region’s leader in annual Black History Month celebrations.
In 2012, in keeping with an emphasis on education and learning, the county is sponsoring a program that includes lectures, storytelling, dance and music. The highlight will be the annual Business Breakfast and Scholarship Recognition Program, which will feature writer and publisher Maya Payne Smart as the guest speaker. Twelve scholarships will be awarded to Chesterfield County high school seniors to be used at a Virginia college or university.
“The national theme for this year’s Black History Month is Black Women in American History and Culture. We are proud to honor the contributions of African American men and women to our community and our nation. Our diversity makes Chesterfield County a First Choice community, and we are pleased to be able to commemorate Black History Month with a series of outstanding programs and events this February,” said County Administrator James J.L. Stegmaier.
